Roxzone explained: what counts, and how much time it costs

What the HYROX Roxzone is, how Roxzone time is worked out, what's normal at 1:00, 1:15 and 1:30 in real results, and how much of the gap it explains.

The Roxzone is the transition area between the HYROX run course and the workout stations. You go in and out of it through arches on every lap, and your Roxzone time is everything that isn't a run or a station: your finish time minus your eight runs and eight stations. In Bangkok 2026 it was about 9 to 10% of the finish time for men at 1:00, 1:15 and 1:30 alike, so it matters, but it's rarely where most of your time goes.

What counts as Roxzone#

The rulebook doesn't give the Roxzone a one-line definition. What it does say is that every course combines the run course, the Roxzone and the station areas, and that the run portion itself is 8,000 m.1 The Roxzone is the bit that joins them. You come off the run course into it, walk or jog to your station, do the station, and come back out through it to start the next run.

The timing works off chip mats at the arches. A typical results page shows a Rox In time (you came off the run), a station In and Out time, and a Rox Out time (you left for the next run). The gaps between those are your Roxzone, in two halves per station: a walk-in and a walk-out.

Most results pages just give you one Roxzone total, worked out as finish minus runs minus stations. Mine adds up exactly: 1:13:38 minus 33:14 of runs and 33:39 of stations is 6:45.2 That means anything that isn't timed as a run or a station lands in the Roxzone, water stops included.

A few rules apply only here, and every one is a 2-minute penalty:1

  • entering the Roxzone through the OUT arch, or leaving through the IN arch;
  • leaving a station through that station's IN arch;
  • dropping cups or gel wrappers on the Roxzone floor, or spitting.

Arch mistakes are picked up automatically by the chip reads. And don't wander into the Roxzone before your start time, because it can trigger your chip and give you a wrong race time. Water is available at least once on every pass through it.1

How long is the Roxzone?#

There's no fixed distance. It depends on how the venue is laid out. The one measured figure comes from a study of 24 Pro men at HYROX Madrid 2025, where the researchers put the runs plus the Roxzone at 8.70 km.3 Take out the 8,000 m of running and that venue's Roxzone was about 700 m in total.

Those Pro men covered it at 10.5 km/h, slower than any of their runs (16.1 km/h on run 1, 13.6 km/h on run 8).3 Seven hundred metres at that speed works out to about four minutes. That's our arithmetic on their averages, not a number they report, and it's one venue.

What's normal: three levels from one race#

Because the layout changes the distance, the only fair comparison is inside one race. So we took the result pages of every man who finished near 1:00, 1:15 and 1:30 at HYROX Bangkok 2026 and worked out their Roxzone.4

The share barely moves. Faster athletes spend less time in the Roxzone, but they spend less time on everything else too, so it stays at roughly a tenth of the race at every level, creeping up slightly in the slower group.

That gives you the honest answer to "how much time am I losing in the Roxzone". Between the 1:00 group and the 1:15 group there's about 15 minutes of finish time, and the Roxzone medians differ by 1:28. That's about a tenth of the gap. Between 1:15 and 1:30 the medians differ by 2:07 out of about 14 and a half minutes, about 15%. The rest, five-sixths or more of every gap, is running and stations.

So the Roxzone is worth tidying up, because it's time you can save without getting any fitter. It's just not where a slow race is usually decided.

Why your Roxzone number needs context#

The same Roxzone time can look very different depending on what you compare it with. Mine was 6:45. In the Bangkok men's field that ranked 218th of 3,254, about the top 7%.2 HYRESULT also compares you against its results from every season, and there the same 6:45 is only in the top 44.6%.

Across all seasons on HYRESULT's men's page, the median Roxzone is about 7:10, with the middle half between about 5:41 and 9:17 (read from their histogram of 347,041 results).2 Bangkok's field was slower than that set overall, which is why a mid-table Roxzone in the global data ranks well in Bangkok. If you want to know whether your transitions were good, compare yourself with people in your own race who finished near you.

Where my 6:45 went#

My timing table splits the Roxzone per station.2 The biggest single chunks were the walk-out after the SkiErg (0:53), the walk-in to the sandbag lunges (0:58) and the walk-in to the farmers carry (0:45). The shortest were 0:03 and 0:04 walking into the SkiErg and the sled push, which tells you more about where the mats sit in that venue than about me. The full per-station table is in the compromised running guide.

Adding walk-in and walk-out per station, the sled pull and the lunges cost the most (1:07 each), then the row (1:04). The sled push was the quickest at 0:43. The 14 mat gaps add to 6:48, three seconds off the official 6:45 because each one is rounded to the second. Run 8 has no Roxzone mat before the wall balls, so the walk to the wall ball target sits inside the run 8 split rather than the Roxzone.

How to get faster in the Roxzone#

No study has tested Roxzone training, so this is practical, not proven.

Keep moving. In the Madrid data the Roxzone was by far the slowest part of the running, even for Pro men.3 A steady jog through it beats a walk, and you won't need much fitness to do it.

Decide your water stops before the race. Water is offered on every pass.1 Stopping at all eight is a choice. Pick the ones you need, and drink while walking.

Learn the layout. Courses differ, and the gap between the timing mats and the stations differs too. Walk the venue or study the course map if it's published, so you know where each station and each arch is.

Practise the transitions in your bricks. When you train a station into a run, start the run clock the moment you put the equipment down, not when you feel ready. That's what the race does.

Measure it. Paste your finish time, eight run splits and station total into the HYROX splits analyzer and it works out your Roxzone and your Roxzone per round. Then compare it with the band above that matches your finish, rather than with a number from a different venue.

Questions

What is the Roxzone in HYROX?
The transition area between the run course and the workout stations. You enter and leave it through IN and OUT arches on every lap of the race, and the time you spend there counts toward your finish.
How is Roxzone time calculated?
Results services report it as your finish time minus your eight runs and your eight stations. Everything that isn't a run or a station ends up in it: walking in, walking out, water, and finding your lane.
What is a good Roxzone time?
It depends on the venue, so compare within one race. In Bangkok 2026, the median was 5:20 for men who finished around 1:00, 6:48 around 1:15 and 8:55 around 1:30. In each group it was about 9 to 10% of the finish time.
How long is the Roxzone?
There's no fixed distance. It depends on the venue layout. At HYROX Madrid 2025, researchers measured the runs plus the Roxzone at 8.70 km, which puts that venue's Roxzone at about 700 m in total.
